Gross!!

Tuesday 2-15-11

Got over my stomach bug and then immediately got a cold : ( So I was chugging airborn every night to try and boost my immune system and get over it quicker. I'm just hoping that all this sickness this year will mean that next year I will have a iron immune system to keep those little, germy children from getting me sick all the time!!

Valentine's Day

Monday 2-14-11

I was given three carnations on Valentine's Day- one from the random worker at Lenior and two from the sweet girls that I babysat for the night. And since I don't own a vase, the flowers were put in a Sierra Mist bottle haha!

International Friends Bible Study

Sunday 2-13-11

These are some of the students that we meet with to study the Bible each week. The guy on the left and the girl on the right are the other two leaders.

So much Sierra Mist

Saturday 2-12-11

Again, I was sick, but I didn't want to not take a picture so...

I drank a lot of Sierra Mist over that weekend...

Slumdog Millionaire

Friday 2-11-11

I got sick on Friday and instead of cashing in on the Valentine's Day weekend babysitting, I watched Slumdog Millionaire over and over and didn't leave my room for about 2 days. I say that I watched it again and again because it took me three tries to get through the whole thing without falling asleep.

This one is sort of dumb...

2-10-11

Apparently the most exciting thing I did this day was to wash my jeans while babysitting.... I don't know what this says about my life....

UNC v Duke (take 1)

2-9-11

Me, very intently watching the basketball game.

UNC v Duke (part 2) coming soon!! The outcome IS going to be better!

Let the blogging marathon begin

Hi!! Sorry that it has been FOREVER since I posted pictures!! I hope that there are still people out there reading this thing. I'm going to try to get caught up, so sorry if you read this on a google reader, there's going to be a lot!!!

Tuesday 2-8-11

Riverside reunion after Tuesday Night Worship. Not really a reunion considering that I see Kara and Lindsey several times a week.

If not just adoption, than what?

If you haven't read my post about my adoption dilemma, go read it here first. In this post, I talked about my thoughts on adoption and that we really need to be thinking beyond just adoption when it comes to orphan care. So I want to give you some suggestions about ways for us to be involved beyond adoption.

1. PRAY!

I know that this is hard. We want to be directly involved, feeling like we are doing something to help the situation. We want to be the one holding a child's hand.

But I really believe and have seen that prayer is the only thing that will make a real, long-term difference. Prayer should be the basis for everything that we do. Ask God where He wants you to be involved and ask Him to care for the children in the world.

We can only do so much, but God can do everything if we just ask.

Expect great things from God, attempt great things for God.

2. If you can, adopt or foster a child.

There are hundreds of children right here in the Triangle that need foster parents. These kids are being neglected and abused in some cases, maybe you are the one that God wants to use to give a child right here in Durham or Chapel Hill or Raleigh a chance to be loved and hear the Gospel. If you can provide them a home, pray about it and see if that is something that God might want you to do. If you are not in a place to do that, I am not, support those that are. Babysit for them or just go and play with the kids and let mom have a break! Buy t-shirts and coffee and chick-fil-a from those who are adopting. I really do think that these are wonderful ways that we can be involved in changing the world for a child.

3. Sponsor a child.

There are countless organizations that you can go through to sponsor a child, both here in the States and around the world. Of course, do your research, ask around, and make sure that the organization that you choose to go through is a good organization that will actually get your money to the children that need it.

Don't want to spend a lot of time doing research? Here's a great organization that needs lots more sponsors and will continue to need more. And I know that they are wonderful because I have been there!!

4. Help fundraise for an organization, orphanage or adopting family

I don't mean to keep talking only about my favorite orphanage, but, oh well haha. Crosspoint has had to turn away so many children over the past year as they wait for the money to expand their facilities.

Here's the deal, in order for an orphanage to take good care of their children, it takes more resources than the bad ones that neglect their children. It takes more workers, more space, more food, more clothes, more tutors, more everything- and all of that, requires more money. Are you good at fundraising and coming up with ideas to inspire people to support work around the world? Good! That is a gift from God! I am not good at that stuff, I wish that I were. You can be huge in helping people all around the world raise the funds that they need to take care of the children that God wants to entrust to them.

Find an organization that you are passionate about and ask them how you can help. Chances are, they will not say no!!

5. GO

Everything changes when you meet the children that we are talking about. We can use statistics all day long and it will mean nothing. We are so immune to statistics. I say that there are 147 million orphans in the world, that does very little to us. I can say that there are 80 million children living in desolate conditions in India, 27 million of whom are orphans as well. That means nothing.

What changes it is when you know they're names.

Knowing that there are 27 million orphans in India breaks my heart because I don't hear a number, I see a face and I hear a name in my head. Those children are not just a statistic to me, they are Rani, Shivani, Jameson, Chaitan, Ruth, Ester, and I could go on and on.

Seeing their faces changes everything.

So, go. Find somewhere and go spend some time volunteering at an orphanage overseas. Go downtown and find someway to volunteer with the foster kids. Go volunteer at the local YMCA or work with groups like CEF that minister to inner-city kids. Go to India. Here's the website for the Christmas team that will be going Christmas 2011. It will be the best Christmas of your life so far- no lie. There are also a lot of other trips that Crossroads take throughout the year, check those out. Pray about it and go!

Just go.

I believe that doing these things and anything else that God leads you to do to serve the orphans of the world will change your life. God will use these experiences to change the way you see the orphan crisis and the way that you see yourself being involved in orphan care.

Caring for orphans is not for some special class of Christians. Its not just for those who are called to adopt or those who are called to go live on the other side of the world. It is for every single one of us.

"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after the orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world" James 1:27

My adoption dilemma

Adoption is something that I think about a lot. No, I'm not adopting, obviously, but I do love adoption and love hearing stories of adoption and supporting people who are adopting.

But, I have a dilemma when it comes to adoption. I have begun to notice some things that don't sit right with me and my experiences working at an orphanage have also changed some of my ideas about adoption.

This is me trying to sort through these different things. Maybe you have thought about it and have some thoughts to share, maybe not. Maybe you have never thought about adoption or orphans at all, maybe this will change that.

I hope that I don't come across as judgmental. If you are adopting, than I am so happy for you. You are following God's call on your life and doing what you can to live out the command to care for the fatherless that is given in the Bible.

That said, we have to be thinking about ways beyond adoption to care for orphans.

Adoption is not going to save the world.
Adoption is not going to solve the orphan crisis.
Adoption will not even necessarily save the child that is adopted.

This is my main concern that I get from reading that adoption blogs that I do (I know, I'm a creeper). I hope that more adoptions continue to happen, but adoption is not the only way to care for orphans and it is not going to be the solution to the problem. Not enough people want to adopt and there are so many children in the world who can't be adopted, even if someone did want to adopt them. This is for a variety of reasons. Not all of the children in the 147 million orphans figure are actual orphans, many still have parents or family that for some reason are not able to care for them. Many of these children are older than most want to adopt, not all orphans are babies or even young children, teenagers are orphans too, how often do you hear of teenagers being adopted? (Sidenote, a couple at my church just adopted two teenagers from the Ukraine- so awesome! pray for them with me please!) Finally, not all countries are open to international adoption.

Adoption is not going to happen for many of these children, so are they just completely out of luck? Is there nothing that we can do for them?

I'm not going to lie, reading these blogs, I get frustrated with the way that adoption is often presented as the only way to help orphans, the end all be all solution to the orphan crisis. These irritates me for a number of reasons. I'm 20 years old and single, I am not about to adopt a child. So where do I fit in in caring for orphans? There really isn't a place for me if adoption is the only option, and yet this is what God has called me to do in my life, so there has to be a place for me in it, right? Also, like I was saying, there are so many children that are not going to be adopted and if adoption is our only solution, then they are completely left out in the cold.

There are so many other ways that we can be involved. There are so many different organizations that need sponsors for children. The orphanage that I work with needs sponsors, there are so many smaller feeding and education programs that need support and help so that children can be fed and educated. 30,000 children will die today from malnutrition and related diseases! These children are not all orphans, but they are all children who we can care for and love. Children are going through their lives without ever going to school, what is their life going to be like?

Another thing that just doesn't sit right with me is the language that is used to talk about these children. They are put into categories: adoptable, unadoptable, and WAITING. I can't tell you how much I hate hearing children described as waiting, waiting, waiting. Waiting for what? And when do they get to stop waiting? If a child is "waiting" at 4 years old, is he still waiting when he's 15 and still hasn't been adopted? These are all just children, whether they are adoptable or not, they are just children who have been through so much pain and they just need someone to love them.

Finally, adoption creates a dependence. While we are trying to create a culture of adoption here in the States, what will that do in the other countries from where the children are being adopted? My roommate spent 6 months living and working at orphanages in Uganda before our freshman year. She has told me many things about her time there that I fascinates me, but one thing that has stuck with me is a conversation that she had about adoption. Her aunt and uncle live in Uganda and she was talking with them about adoption and they said that they didn't actually really like adoption, because it makes child abandonment ok. If people see that Americans are coming and taking care of the orphans, then they will be more likely to abandon their own children when times get hard and they can't care for them. Also, by adopting all these children, are we stepping on the toes of the local Church? Doing the job that they should be doing in taking care of their children for them?

But here's the dilemma, don't those children deserve families though?

Don't all these kids need moms and dads who will love them and care for them?
People to tuck them in at night and hold them when they are scared?

I don't have an answer. All my thoughts on this are so contradictory. I love orphanages, but I also do really believe that children need families and mainly, parents who will love them.

I rest in the fact that I do not have to decide this. It's not like it has to be one thing or the other, either everyone adopts or no one adopts. I feel called to work at an orphanage, some feel called to adopt- we all must just follow what God is telling us each to do and trust that He knows what He is doing.

But I will continue to share my thoughts on adoption. I feel like I have a unique viewpoint on it, having seen what a God-centered orphanage can look like and I am going to share what I have experienced. I want people to know that there are ways besides adoption that we can all be involved in orphan care. There are ways that a single, college or high school student can love a child and make a difference in their life, even if I can't bring them to my home. I want you all to be aware of the ways that we can all be a part of this ministry, because we are all supposed to be involved. James 1:27 does not just call out married couples looking to adopt, it says that it is the duty of every believer to care for the fatherless.

Finally, I rest in the knowledge of Psalm 68:6- "God sets the lonely in families"

Those families will not necessary look like ours. They might be an orphanage or a church family or maybe a dad, mom, siblings and a dog. Who knows? Only God.

One more thing- can we please stop calling them "waiting" children?? k, thanks!!

Much love!!

Read on here for ideas besides adoption. I will continue to share ideas as I come up with them.

Hello to my old friend, DAVIS!!!

Monday 2-7-11

Oh, Davis Library, how I've missed you!!

Ok, that's a stretch. I have so far been able to avoid going to Davis, except once to do homework with a group from one of my classes.  But, on Monday, I braved those rickety, terrifying elevators and returned to my 5th floor table with my dear friends who always keep me company.

I feel like this picture looks familiar.....
Thank-you, Lindsey and Rebecca, for always humoring me when I ask to take awkward pictures of you at the end of the night (not that you look awkward in this picture!!) I love you guys!!

My (sort of) comfort food

Sunday 2-6-11

Sunday was not a stressful day, but a busy day. I got up and went to church and played with my 1 year olds there and then I went and babysat for a small group that I've started sitting for and then I went and babysat for another small group's Superbowl party. It was  a little bit of a crazy day!! But I loved every minute of it! This is what I do, I love kids. There is nothing that I love more than tickling and wrestling with a bunch of little kids. Even though I was worn out and by the end of the night, I was loosing my voice, and apparently I'm getting old, cause my back was starting to hurt from picking up so many kids, I loved every second that I was with all these precious crazy children!!!

I didn't take any pictures though haha.

So instead, I have a picture of my snack/dinner when I returned, completely exhausted to my dorm.

Happy birthday, Greear babies!!

Saturday 2-5-11

I spent Saturday morning celebrating the two youngest Greear children's birthdays. Here some of my favorite pictures.

RL very intently licking the icing off of Dora's head.

Not entirely sure what's going on and why everyone is finding it so funny that he's covered in icing.... normally playing with food is frowned upon and yet, his mom is telling him to stick his face in the cake... dad even demonstrated...

RL modeling the Dora sunglasses that I got for her, although the bumblegum was the preferred gift I think

How the glasses were worn for the rest of the party. Too cute!!

A trying to figure out his new toy, I think that dad and sisters are going to get more fun out of it for a while.

Love these kids so much!! Thanks for inviting me and letting me love your kids, Veronica!

I think I'm in love...

Friday 2-4-11

...with my new straightener!!

It was rainy and gross all day Friday and I didn't have an umbrella for part of the time that I was outside running errands and stuff.

BUT... at the end of the day my hair was still straight!!!!

Geology studying time!!!

Thursday 2-3-11

Studied for our first Geology exam with the roomie at Foster's on Thursday. Bragging rights to whoever can figure out what that mnemonic devise is for!!

I love my flip-flops!!

Wednesday 2-2-11

I especially love wearing flip-flops in February. It's the greatest!!

Revelation 21: 3-4

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be His people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away."

Contentment

I have been experiencing something pretty unusual for me.

I am content.

I am completely happy where God has me right now.

Maybe its because I know that I will be in India soon (can't wait for this summer!!!) or maybe its because I'm finally truly trusting in God's plan for me and seeing the good that is coming from waiting on His timing.

But I am happy being here.

I don't usually feel this way. I am an impatient person. When I figured out the summer before my senior year of high school that India is where I'm supposed to be, that's where I wanted to be. Right then. God had other plans.

He didn't want me to go that Christmas, I don't know why. I do know that by waiting, when I did go, it was everything that I had hoped and thought that it would be and so much more. Maybe He knew that if I went that Christmas, I would be going even more crazy waiting to go back than I am right now. I don't know, but I do know that His way is best.

But now I have been. I now I want to go back so bad sometimes, it hurts.

A few of my friends are trying so hard right now to figure out what they're majors will be and what they will do with their lives. I know what to do with my life. I have known for a while now and its hard not being able to do it.

But I trust.

I trust that there is a reason that I'm supposed to be here right now. I trust that there are things that I am learning that will be so important when my time to go finally comes. I just trust.

I've been learning and growing so much in the past few months, it blows my mind. I have so many amazing people pouring into my life in so many different ways. I get to be a small part of several wonderful families from the Summit and get to spend hours loving and being loved by some of the cutest children in the world. When I show up at the Greear's house, little RL comes running to me with the biggest smile on her face. And I have the absolute best parents in the world and the greatest siblings a girl could ask for.

I can't wait to go to India, both this summer and for however long after I graduate, but for now, God wants me here and I am happy to be here.

You Hold Me Now

This is another of my favorite songs. We've sung it a couple of times in Cornerstone, always making me tear up, and I never knew who it was by. Of course, its by Hillsong- who else?

You Hold Me Now

On that day when I see
All that You have for me
When I see You face to face
There surrounded by Your grace
All my fears swept away
In the light of Your embrace
Where Your love is all I need
And forever I am free

Where the streets are made of gold
In Your presence healed and whole
Let the songs of heaven
Rise to You alone

No weeping no hurt or pain
No suffering You hold me now
You hold me now
No darkness no sick or lame
No hiding You hold me now
You hold me now
In this life I will stand
Through my joy and my pain
Knowing there's a greater day
There's a hope that never fails
Where Your Name is lifted high
And forever praises rise
For the glory of Your Name
I'm believing for the day
Where the wars and violence cease
All creation lives in peace
Let the songs of heaven
Rise to You alone
 For eternity
All my heart will give
All the glory to Your Name

How I read the Bible

I was thinking the other day about how I read the Bible. I listen to people talk about how they long to be in the Word and learn so much during their time with God and can find such deep truths in the simplest verses, and it got me thinking...

Why don't I feel like that towards the Bible?

I spend time reading the Bible. I have been good about having my daily quiet time. I would read a chapter from whatever book of the Bible I was in at the time, read a Psalm, and then pray.

But I never longed to read the Bible.

It's what I do in the morning while I eat my breakfast.

It's what I do because I know that I should.

It's what I do because I honestly love spending my time in the morning with God and can completely tell a difference in my day if for some reason I missed a morning.

But I wouldn't say that I love the Bible.

And I think that I know why.

I tend to read the Bible the way that I read my books for school, not the way that I read my books for fun. There is a complete difference in the two.

My school books I read out of obligation. Even when I enjoy them and find them interesting, I don't love reading them, I don't read ahead of the assigned reading because I'm dieing to find out something new about rocks (I'm taking goel 101).

I read what I have to, but no more.

With the books that I read because I want to, its completely different. When I was reading Harry Potter for the first time, I would stay up till like 1 in the morning reading, nevermind that I had to get up at 6 for school the next day. I couldn't wait to get home and be done with my school work so that I could sit up in my room and read. I would turn off the TV and instead read.

Why do I get more excited about reading Harry Potter than I do the Word of God?

I think that I read the Bible the way that I read for school. I might enjoy it and I definitely learn from it, but I don't do it for fun. I don't sit down in my spare time to pick up my Bible and do some pleasure reading in Leviticus.

I think that I put a lot of pressure on myself, I tend to think that if I don't find some life-changing theology in every verse, than I'm not working hard enough.

I turn it into a chore, instead of a joy.

So, I'm trying something new. I'm just reading. I'm starting in Genesis and I'm just reading. If something jumps out at me, I write it down, but I'm not stressing myself out about how much I read or what I get out of what I read. I just read.

I hope to get all the way through during this year, but I'm not going to stress out over following a schedule. The other day, I read one chapter, today I read 6.

And I'm enjoying it!

Maybe this is something that you can relate to. If so, I would love to hear what you think, things that you have been thinking about or praying about.

This is what I'm trying, I'll let you know how it goes.

If you would pray for me, that I would develop a true love and joy in God's Word, I would appreciate it!!

Will you join me tomorrow?

"Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me."
Matthew 25:40

What will your lunch be tomorrow? Do you buy lunch? How much will it cost?

A meal at Bottom of Lenoir can cost more than 6$. A lunch with your meal plan costs about $8.

For one meal.

One of the bloggers that I follow, Building the Blocks, has asked that tomorrow, we join her daughter in giving up our lunch tomorrow and donating that money instead to Adami Tulu preschool in Ethiopia. The school runs a feeding program for the local children. $3 can feed a child for a month.

$3!!
That's it! Just $3 and a child will be fed for a whole month. A child who otherwise would not eat or would not eat well. All it will take to change a child's life is just one lunch.

I will be joining Amy and her daughter tomorrow and sending my lunch money to Lifesong.

Will you??

You can get more information about One Day, One Lunch on Amy's blog here. If you would like to join, you can make an online donation or mail a check to Lifesong for Orphans.

Online: http://www.lifesongfororphans.org/donation.html and indicate **Adami Tulu Preschool

Or mail it to:
Lifesong for Orphans
PO Box 40
Gridley, IL 61744
For the Adami Tulu Preschool

One meal, that's all it takes.
**Ok I read that post wrong haha and thought it was tomorrow, it actually was today, but that doesn't really matter does it? I'm doing it tomorrow and so should you!!**

I absolutely loved this verse!

I wanted to share one of the passages that we talked about at my small group tonight. It blew me away!

God, speaking about His lost children- every one of us.

"I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I myself will make them lie down, declares the Lord GOD. I will seek the lost and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, and the fat, and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them in justice." ~Ezekiel 34:15-16

Why we have to talk about it

I just want to take a second and explain a little bit about why I talk about boys and getting married on here so much.

Apparently, I've freaked my mom out a little bit cause she thinks that I'm really scared that I'm never going to get married. So I just want to talk about that for a second.

I'm not always worried, anymore. Some days I freak out about. Some days I get totally terrified about the thought of moving to India all alone. Some days I am totally worried. But on those days, I remind myself that God is in control of my life. He knew how my life was going to go long before the day I was born. He has a fantastic plan for my life and all I have to do is trust Him.

But.

That is so much easier said than done. ESPECIALLY in today's church. It is easy to get freaked out when I look around and see the shortage of men around me. (and I'm not just talking about at Carolina- that is a completely different problem) I'm not saying that all the guys in the church are wimps or anything like that AT ALL. I know great Christian guys who are going to be wonderful husbands and strong leaders. But, it just doesn't seem like there are enough of them. Or they won't take the initiative in the relationship. Or, for me, they don't want to go overseas.

I'm not trying to bash on the guys in Cornerstone or at Summit, like I said, I know some really great guys in both.

What I'm saying is that this is an issue that we are scared about. Girls my age are worried that there isn't going to be strong Christian men to go around.

We're scared.

But nobody wants to talk about it.

We NEED to talk about it. We can't carry it around inside or the worry and fear is going to build up and become an idol. That's what happened to me and that's why I talk about it so much.

I don't have a solution to the problem that we are facing. I am trying desperately to trust God with my life and my future. It's a day by day process.

What I do know is that this is something that we girls need to talk about. Girls need to know that they aren't the only ones who are scared about this. We need to know that its normal, but that it doesn't have to consume us. That there is a way out. A way to find peace about the fact that we may be single.

So I'm going to keep writing about it. Because I hope that by doing so, I will be able to encourage someone who is struggling through what I am going through and help them find a peace in our Father and to rest in His promises.

Oh Lenior...

Tuesday 2-1-11

I mean, they can't mess up waffles that you make yourself right?? This was Lindsey's dinner in Tuesday. It actually looks good, I kinda want one now.

Application!!!

Monday 1-31-11

So like I said on an earlier post, my school of ed application was due, so that's what I spent Monday night doing.

Hoping I get in!!

This one is strange

Sunday 1-30-11

So awhile I posted this. Go look at it.

This is what it normally looks like. We've been in school for like 3 weeks I think and we've already gone through a whole DDP flat from Costco.

Application party!!

Saturday 1-29-11

My friend, Bemi, and I got together on Saturday to work on our school of education applications. Bemi is a braver soul than I am and is applying for the middle grades program, I am sticking with my cute elementary schoolers. We submitted our applications on Tuesday, so if you all could be praying that we get in that would be awesome!! Neither of us have any other plan for our lives haha. We have to be teachers...

Humidity will not affect me now!!

Friday 1-28-11

Ulta was having a sale and we had a coupon and so now I have a Chi! Very happy. And today, even though it was wet and kinda muggy, my hair stayed relatively straight!!

Cute Little Princess

Thursday 1-27-11

Recently, I've been spending a lot of time with the Greear family, Veronica specifically, which has been absolutely fantastic! It's great to be able to spend time with her and learn from her.

It also means that I get to see her children a lot, which is definitely a bonus.

This princess and I hung out last Thursday.

For those of you that don't know, princess dresses also make great nightgowns for naptime. RL had to change into this little get-up specifically for her nap. Granted, she did take off the princess heels before getting in bed.

Love these girls so much!!

Wednesday 1-26-11

I am so blessed to be in a really great Summit small group here at UNC. It's only college girls and they are all so awesome. I have grown so much through our time together and have made great friendships because of it. The picture is of most of the girls after we got together to watch the UNC v Miami game. Lauren (one of the leaders) is very disappointed in the number of us who are uninterested in basketball. Anyway, we are all crowded onto her lovesack (the real name of the thing).

Wow! I'm so behind!!

Hey everybody!! Sorry It's been a while since I blogged!! I'm going to try to get caught up!

Also, this is my 200th post!!! Thanks all of you who have been reading and following so faithfully, even when my life is way to boring to deserve being shared!!

Tuesday 1-25-11

Unfortunately, my 200th post is not going to be that exciting. My roomie likes to draw and I like elephants, so she drew me a picture of an elephant haha.

I really liked this picture because my camera focused on the reflection of Brynne's bed instead of the picture, which I thought was cool.
