Rapunzel- A princess I can love

I would not consider myself a feminist and I don't think that Disney movies are inherently evil and teaching our daughters terrible things.

But after reading a couple of books and having a number of discussions along those lines, some of the arguments against Disney really start to make sense.

As much as I LOVE the Little Mermaid, she sells her voice for a boy. I'm not sure how I feel about that...*

All that to say, tonight I watched Tangled with a friend (not for the first time, just for funsies) and I couldn't help but analyze it for the underlying messages it sends our young girls (I didn't do it on purpose, but sometimes I just can't turn off the UNC mind).

Let me tell you, I love Rapunzel.

I think that she is an awesome princess. She's beautiful, sweet, and totally kicks butt and takes names.

She's the kind of princess I would want a young girl to admire.

She is the balance of innocent and naive, but sassy and observant. She figures out what is going on pretty quickly and stands up for herself. This blonde has some fiest to her.

I love fiest.

And the best thing is, both she and Flynn are great. It seems in these kinds of movies that either the girl is sleeping and the boy saves the day, or the girl is awesome and the boy is a doofus.

Flynn is great. He fights for his girl. And lets be real, no matter how much feminism tells us otherwise, a girl wants a boy who is going to fight for her. A man who is going to defend her. I believe that is what we were created to long for. And in the end, both were willing to sacrifice themselves for the others well-being.

Merida in Brave was hailed as a Disney princess for feminists. She was fierce and a fighter. Like the awesome Katniss Everdeen, she was an amazing archer. And most importantly, she didn't want to get married. I had one problem with Merida...

She was a brat.

I couldn't stand her. The way she treated her family and threw temper tantrums was just annoying. (sorry if you liked the movie- the animation and music was beautiful, but I couldn't stand her).

This is not who I want girls emulating, they get enough brattiness from other TV shows and movies.

Why can't a girl be cute and girly? Why can't she be sweet and naive? Why can't she use a frying pan as a weapon?

Obviously, the person that we want our girls to emulate the most is Jesus first and foremost and then the Bible and Christian history is full of amazing women who gave their lives to God and others.

But when it comes to role models in secular culture, I really like Rapunzel.

*I am all for watching The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast (Belle is my favorite princess), but I definitely think that those movies need to be watched together and discussed (as most things do). However, the ones where the girl literally just sleeps while the prince slays the dragon (Sleeping Beauty and Snow White) nope, just nope.

Just watched the finale of Lost again. I've been working my way through the whole series for the second time since December.

I didn't like it the first time through (the finale, not the show).

But upon finishing it for the second, I have to say that I LOVED the ending and I found it completely satisfying.

Now I have to find something new to watch...

Oral Hygiene

Monday 3-28-11

After being lectured a few times by my dentist about how I don't floss enough, I'm finally trying to be better. Also, I drink so much coffee and DDP (diet dr pepper) that I have to whiten a lot.

Trying to eat orange stuff...

Trying to eat some things that are healthy... we'll see how it goes haha.

So many shoes

Wednesday 2-23-11

I'm often too lazy to put away my shoes at the end of the day and so they just pile up and this is the eventual result.

This picture also shoes how spastic the weather has been recently. Of course, NC is always like that this time of year, but one day I'm wearing sandals and loving it, then the next I need to get my boots back out.

This one is sort of dumb...

2-10-11

Apparently the most exciting thing I did this day was to wash my jeans while babysitting.... I don't know what this says about my life....

My (sort of) comfort food

Sunday 2-6-11

Sunday was not a stressful day, but a busy day. I got up and went to church and played with my 1 year olds there and then I went and babysat for a small group that I've started sitting for and then I went and babysat for another small group's Superbowl party. It was  a little bit of a crazy day!! But I loved every minute of it! This is what I do, I love kids. There is nothing that I love more than tickling and wrestling with a bunch of little kids. Even though I was worn out and by the end of the night, I was loosing my voice, and apparently I'm getting old, cause my back was starting to hurt from picking up so many kids, I loved every second that I was with all these precious crazy children!!!

I didn't take any pictures though haha.

So instead, I have a picture of my snack/dinner when I returned, completely exhausted to my dorm.

It was rainy and gross all day Friday and I didn't have an umbrella for part of the time that I was outside running errands and stuff.

BUT... at the end of the day my hair was still straight!!!!

I love my flip-flops!!

Wednesday 2-2-11

I especially love wearing flip-flops in February. It's the greatest!!

This one is strange

Sunday 1-30-11

So awhile I posted this. Go look at it.

This is what it normally looks like. We've been in school for like 3 weeks I think and we've already gone through a whole DDP flat from Costco.

Love it!

Sunday 1-23-11

I was talking awhile back with a woman at Summit about how great it is that in college you can once again eat all of you favorite elementary school snacks- goldfish, graham crackers, pop tarts, and...

Gushers!!!

And its perfectly acceptable!! Got to love college!

Super excited to get to hang out with Katie over break!

Really North Carolina?!?!?!

Saturday 12-18-10

Really?? More snow??

Heading Home!

Tuesday 12-14-10

All packed up and ready to go home (at least the first trip haha).  The majority of what I took home was in the form of laundry... (is that too much info to put out on the internet??)

Dinner with CS Lewis

Monday 12-13-10

It's kinda a boring picture, but just be glad it wasn't in the library haha.

I told you I'm on a CS Lewis kick right now. I have a couple that I'm going to try to read over break.

Oh, and I used up every one of my meal on my meal plan this semester! I know that doesn't mean much to most of you, but trust me, that's impressive!

And I do have thoughts on the Dawn Treader coming up, I just need to get around to writing it haha.

Pretty Rainbow

12-12-10

You can't see it very well, but there was a really pretty rainbow coming back into Chapel Hill today. I snapped while at a stoplight, so no worries about driving while taking pictures, that would not be safe.

Blogging isn't the only thing I get behind on

Friday 12-10-10

Came back after my second exam on Friday and realized this is what my desk had become.

Not that I keep it completely clean all the time and that's not really even that bad compared to what I'm sure some look like, but I typically at least try to keep the books from piling up, etc. During exam studying, I let the place become somewhat of a mess. Luckily, I have a roommate who stress cleans and I came back to all the dishes done haha. Not that I take advantage of that, I do her dished too. But I do love it when she has a big test or paper. Our room is never cleaner.

My view walking to class everyday

Thursday 12-9-10

If you went to UNC or have ever been on campus, there is one sight that is extremely familiar to you. No, I'm not talking about the Old Well, the Dean Smith Center, or even Davis Library. I'm talking about this.

Construction.
Everyday I walk past this and I ask myself two questions.

1. When will they be done?!?!

2. Was it really a good idea to start construction on the football stadium right before football season started? Just a thought.

Snow

Sunday 12-5-10

As many of you know, I have a love/hate relationship with snow, mainly leaning towards hate. I have found in the last few years, that my body was very much created for life in India haha. This summer, I didn't mind the 120 degrees very much at all. It was hot, but bearable. However, as soon as it gets belowed like 50, I get miserable. I hate cold weather so much! Give me July any day! It really does not bode well for me that it has already snowed in December in the Triangle. I have never seen this before in my life. I'm sort of dreading January.

But on the other hand, it is so pretty!

I love the look of snow dusted on the trees.

Oh those silly State fans : )

Emily, if you read this, please don't hate me!!

Wednesday 12-1-10

Saw this while walking back from class yesterday, don't know if its been there for a while or someone wrote it after the game last week. It made me laugh and think of my State friends.

Miss you Emily!!
